Michael: Rhetta, I don't think I'm ready to start all over again. Rhetta: I understand. Really. Michael, dating someone else was good for me. It gave me a chance to see how good our relationship was! ... And what it was like without you. Rhetta: Now, I know that it's you I want to be with! - But I understand how you feel. You need to think it over...and maybe, in time, we can pick up the pieces! Michael: I don't know, Rhetta. - You can pick up all the glass, ...But you can't remake the window.
“You can pick up the glass but it won’t remake the window”. I’ve not heard the phrase before, but that is one incisive metaphor.
