That reminds me of my all time favorite “literalist” western cartoon, from the Far Side, in which a sheriff is looking at a pile of horses and people, saying “So you just threw everything together? Matthews, a posse is something you have to organize!” >

Agreed! Over a decade ago, I worked at a large company that had a pretty good cafeteria, but the food truck that showed up in the parking lot for lunch was incredibly popular with the employees, including the executives. A Vietnamese couple ran it, with the husband taking orders and handling money and the wife doing the cooking. Along with the typical fast-food menu (hamburgers, burritos, fried rice, etc.), you could ask for ANYTHING and if they had the ingredients on hand, the woman would make it for you and the man would name a fair price. Sometimes they’d put it on the menu if it got enough requests; the salmon stew was one such item. I patronized that food truck at every opportunity. I regret that I never asked them to cater a large party.

Um…. Mr Mallett doesn’t seem to be aware that the orbital periods of some planets in our solar system are very close to powers of the golden ratio compared to earth’s period. For Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn, the powers of the golden ratio are -3, -1, 5, and 7, respectively, accurate to a couple of decimal points.

If that was one of the billions of cicadas that have arrived this season, well, a lot of people eat them.

I had a similar experience, was driving with moderately heavy traffic when I saw this muscle car in my rearview mirror weaving around all the cars at a much higher speed. He passed me and I watched him weave his way through the traffic until he disappeared over an overpass. When I got over the overpass, there he was on the side of the road getting cited by the highway patrol. My wife and I actually cheered out loud. As I’m sure everyone else did.

I’m retired but I still need to set my alarm to help my son get ready for school. Looking forward to the day when he can do it himself.

A spell checker wouldn’t catch that. Both “accept” and “except” are correct. A human proofreader would do wonders here.

My son’s first word was “bu-yao!” (“don’t want!”) in Mandarin and “No!” in English. Both within about a week of each other. We speak English in the house but my wife was trying to speak to him in Mandarin whenever possible.

There’s a little bit of uncle Ted in all of us, though. Very little. But it’s still there.

Maybe they think “25 cents after four? What does he mean?”
