It was off-panel to the right in Panel 1. (Look at the direction the shadows are pointing in each panel.)
That, or they’re speaking in their native tongue and their dialogue is shown in English. It’s a technique known in the comics industry as “Instant Translation” (yes, that’s a thing), done for the readers’ benefit.
I think the proper term for what they’re standing on or floating over is “silt”.
