Apparently, it used to be called “The Newgate Hornpipe”. I think you can guess why.

Too much effort – just a long rope and a heavy noose at the end will do.

Fascinating that Cash had some fellow feeling for an Aussie bushranger. Thanks for that.

What about the other caveat – be careful what you are about to buy (caveat emptor).

Mairi, you could well be right, except that his name is Jack Doolan, and appears to have been killed – ‘received a mortal wound’. Ned was mostly killed (apologies to The Princess Bride), but was later hanged. As you know.

The song is anonymous, and probably refers to any number of highwaymen (bushrangers) going around at the time. I don’t think the large proportion of Irish-related/born Australians were very happy with the authorities at the time. Oz was still a colony of GB, and mostly governed by the military early in its existence. Such is life.

“Surrender now, Jack Doolan, you see there’s three to one.Surrender now, Jack Doolan, you’re a daring highwayman.”He drew a pistol from his belt, and shook the little toy,“I’ll fight, but not surrender,” said the wild Colonial Boy.

He fired at Trooper Kelly and brought him to the ground,And in return from Davis received a mortal wound. All shattered through the jaws he lay still firing at FitzRoy,And that’s the way they captured him – the wild Colonial Boy.

Once bitten, twice shy; I guess you can always delete your emails …

Sounds like a wild colonial boy, to me …

Well, I am absolutely flummoxed – here I was thinking that most of the residents of the land of the free and the home of the brave knew little if anything of the Great Land of Oz, and you’ve just proved me wrong. Stone the bleedi’ crows!
