   First of all, we have already paid taxes. Most people are trying to get their refunds for the taxes they overpaid. So you see why the government is not making it easier for people to get their money back.

   Second, we have a lot of freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution so Congress cannot pass laws banning certain things. But they can create exemptions for doing the opposite do that people who do those things end up paying tax fines on them. The US tax code is a mess of exemptions to motivate behavior that Congress wants to reward and punish those who don’t do them. The Obamacare penalty for not having medical insurance is one such example.

   The problem with that is that there are so many possible exemptions, deductions, etc that no one can understand them all to follow them.

   When I had my own business, I had to explain some of the deductions I was trying to take to my tax accountant. Now that I am back to having a salaried position, I get my taxes done in a few minutes as I don’t have so many deductions.
