Every rescue team, even an impromptu one, needs a leader.

I used to have a huge purple and yellow plush python on my bed. The cats loved it!

My late Lydia was a big fluffy cat. Kohler was a chubby black and brown tabby, whose main goal in life was to annoy Liddy. We took them on a weekly trip to our cabin on weekends. It was hilly, and the two were in one large crate right behind my husband’s head. Liddy never got carsick. Kohler often did. On one trip, I could tell Kohler was about to be sick. Liddy got as far away as she could, but he put his face in her tail and threw up. It was too much for Liddy. She had wedged herself up behind my husband’s head. She made a low noise that sounded like Hurrrl, and then she did just that, all over the back of his seat. I had to clean it up, of course, but it was still pretty funny.

And, they’re smart. A week ago I slipped on the top step of a long stairway and, while I didn’t fall, I did turn my ankle and had to sit there a while. I didn’t make any noise doing this and everyone had been fed and it was morning nap time for them, yet within seconds I had a full cat contingent sniffing me and looking concerned. And, when I limped down the stairs to the sofa, they followed and swarmed me once I sat down, sniffing and head butting.

Not too long ago I found my kitchen spider had fallen in the sink. She was looking pretty unhappy and wouldn’t trust me to help her out with a piece of paper. After a while and thinking about what Temple Grandin said about animals liking confinement to feel safe, I got an empty toothpaste box, opened both ends, and put it in the sink with one end on the countertop. She went right in, sat a while, then climbed out and disappeared back to her home.

That sideways ear is the cat ability I’m most jealous of! It would be so useful – when someone said something stupid, you could employ it, and if they took exception, just flap the ear down farther and start kicking it like it’s itching and say “What?”.

When my childhood cat, Blackie, was old, she would still get zoomies now and then. She’d run through the house and into my parents’ bedroom, hit the scatter rug, and let momentum carry her under a low clearance bureau. Then, with no room for a running start, she’d feel trapped, cry for help, and my mother would have to come and carefully extract her while Blackie made protest noises.

There are recipes online, but now that I’m away from Florida, I buy mine from Dat’L Do It online. I’m about due to buy another case, too. I just put some in a shrimp creole today and noticed I’m on the last bottle.

A few years back, I drove 26 cats from Bemidji, MN to central Arkansas. It was a 14 hr trip. If you’re driving, the most crucial thing is to have all her vet papers showing vaccinations up to date. You’ll be passing through agricultural states with strict animal transport laws, so be sure to have this if you’re stopped. I had so many, I wrote to the Ag. Commissioner in each state (email) and found out what their requirements were and had the replies in a ring binder in the car so I had it in writing if stopped. Since your trip is longer, line up pet friendly lodging in advance and when you’re in the motel, confine Foxy to a bathroom with her supplies. If you let her loose in the room she’ll find a way to get under something that’s nailed down and it’ll be hell to get her out. And, it pays to line up two places in each overnight stop in case one falls through. Expensive, but not as much pain as losing a cat. And, with Foxy being old, she may have aches and pains after being in a carrier that long. Be prepared to take her to a new vet when you reach your destination for treatment for arthritis. The well advertised pheromone spray sprayed in the carrier helped my cats, but I know it does nothing for others. Good luck!
