Bet you’re a ton of fun at a party. Have you read any kids books? Have read any Dr Seuss or Beatrix Potter or any current kids books? A lot of them have talking animals of different species. Again it’s called using your imagination – ie doesn’t have to be grounded in reality.

She’s a kid who knows that her parents don’t really want her and coping the only way she can. She doesn’t have a better way of expressing herself. Much like why toddlers have tantrums – they don’t have the vocabulary or cognitive ability to say, “This situation is making stressed/upset” so they scream and cry.

Agreed! Bernice reminds me a lot of my mother – several years of therapy is slowly undoing the harmful effects.

Any child having their imagination stifled by a condescending adult.

I have home renovation PTSD from childhood. We lived in what was originally a two bedroom farm house built in 1932. My parents added an addition that gave my sister and I our own rooms, but they didn’t finish main floor/living room for several years. In the meantime they decided that it would be a good winter project for my dad (crop farmer) to strip all of the plaster and lathing from the then kitchen and living room (roughly 1/3 of the house) and replace it with sheet rock. We lived in the house during the whole thing, fifty years later and home renovations give me anxiety attacks – and my husband wonders why I’m so on edge just talking about the renovations we need to do in the next couple of years.

Sadly that was never an option. He was in the military, so early morning had to be shared. I do get quiet mornings most weekends.

Normally one of the voids cooperates, the husband not so much.

I would buy it, this is exactly how I want my coffee.

Pucky, you are so right. 30 years of marriage and my husband still doesn’t understand that this morning person wants her coffee in silence shared only by a void curled up in her lap.
