Not so long ago, people addressed problems based on their merits. (Man: Child labor is an outrage!) Now, however, every dilemma is considered according to economic-not moral- criteria. (Man: They use child labor in China. They use it in Ecuador. Dammit, we just can't compete in the global economy without kids! We'll be left behind in the 21st century!) Even the most obvious issues have to pass the finance test. (Woman: Child molestation must be stopped. It affects our kids' ability to be globally competitive in the free market!) Soon we'll live every second of our lives this way... (Man: If you won't go out with me, I won't be able to compete in the global economy! I'll be left behind in the 21st century!
