Morning, Annie Fans! Don’t you love the way Boo Boo talks? Here’s Chapter 13 of LOAAS.
LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE AND SANDYBy Harold Gray, 1933CHAPTER 13 – The Shadow
On Saturday night Annie slipped out of the house before supper and made her way to the village once more. She took the turn to Millburg and seated herself behind some tall trees. It was cold and dark, but Annie was not afraid. She had waited several minutes before she heard the sound she was waiting for – the swift coming of a car. “Yep,” said Annie. “It’s Elmer Pinchpenny, all right, on his way to Millburg. Wow, and is he hittin’ it up!”
When he had gone, Annie climbed over the fence into the snowy road and walked home. “They have supper at his house at the same time every night,” she reasoned. “If he leaves right after supper, you could figger when he’d pass here within five minutes, I betcha.”
“Well, that’s worth knowin’,” she continued, “I figger if you’ve got business to settle with a guy, it’s a good idea to check up on him, all you can, and know all his habits.” And Annie’s business with Elmer was important, very important indeed.
