The good thing about the Trump administration is that it brought to light just how racist America is.
I’m a child of the 1960s. We changed the world. There was no more “separate but equal” school systems." Black voter registration went up and blacks actually being able to get to the polls and voting increased. White men were not automatically acquitted of murdering black men by all white juries and a judge who was a member of the KKK. The size of KKK rallies decreased.
It was a good start and for decades, things seemed to be getting better. It appeared that racism was dying. It was no longer socially acceptable to make racist comments. It would be a political death sentence for anyone in office to use one or even imply it.
I thought that less than 10% of the people in America were still racist.
Then Trump came along and the all clear for every hate group was sounded and they came out in swarms like roaches from under the refrigerator. I was off by a factor of 4. One in 4 Americans believe (not think – for it cannot be proven) that white is somehow superior. Oh, they don’t all burn crosses on their front lawns and wear hoods and waive flags with swastikas on them or display the Confederate battle flag.
It’s just that, well, we’re white and they’re not. They (we can’t think of them as American or even people) are trying to take SOMETHING away from us and we have to think about our kind and white America first. Trump has found dozens of reasons for Americans to live in fear. It’s all based on lies, rumors mostly propagated on social media. Fox News tells us how if we don’t take action “Western Civilization” (that is White Supremacist Civilization) will be lost forever and the “Browning of America” will make us fall from greatness.
Racism was not dying, it just went underground, it is now fashionable to be overtly racist again. MAGA.
