As per usual, a political cartoon bears at most passing resemblance to reality. This is a primary ballot, so only candidates the State Republican Committee wants there will be on that ballot.
What SCROTUS has done has a veneer of legality: He’s not been convicted, they say, on the January 6th charges (which conviction they’re preventing at the moment… but that’s another issue, they’d say) and so the state cannot legally bar him from the ballot because he’s an insurrectionist. But only a veneer: Being an insurrectionist isn’t a court matter. It’s evident on its face. And of course they’re preventing Smith from trying him at the moment. I’d like to think that they’re playing a lucky game, but these folks WERE all lawyers… and at least moderately intelligent too… and all lawyers are trained in how to play a deep game.
