Peanuts by Charles Schulz for July 22, 1959
Transcript:
Linus watches Charlie Brown reading the paper. Charlie Brown exclaims, "Every day the papers are full of horrible things!"<br> <br> He kicks the paper and continues, "I hate to see little Sally grow up in such a world!"<br> <br> As Charlie Brown grimaces, Linus says,"Don't look so much on the dark side, Charlie Brown..look on the bright side...think of the advancements..."<br> <br> Linus concludes, "..By the time she grows up, there'll be three major leagues!"<br> <br>
Aren’t there still only two major leagues today? NL and AL? I think Linus may be alluding to the Continental League, which was announced in 1959, but disbanded in 1960 without playing a single game, after its originator got the established leagues to expand to eight new teams.
The kinds of strange historical trivia one winds up digging up from reading these old strips!
