The economy was collapsing. Lower oil prices (a joint SArabia/US venture) and their general incompetence at producing anything except military materials. When I taught this I used Soviet documents that showed BOTH responses to “Star Wars”. One showed real concern that the cost of keeping up with the Americans would overwhelm their fragile economy another showed Soviet scientists explaining how a low cost defense against “Star Wars” was quite feasible. Both were high level, Politburo" sources.
I used these then (and now) to show that in history, if you look hard enough, you can find documentation to “prove” your analysis.
As for me, I do think that the “nudge” of SDI was a real thing, but not as much as Afghanistan and most importantly, Gorby’s role in their downfall.
