The word pesky comes from a baseball player for the Red Sox, Joe Pesky. He was not a great hitter, but did things that annoyed pitchers, like bunt for hits, and steal bases. All his home runs were to the shortest part of the wall, the right field foul pole. Thus, all similar players were deemed pesky. The word entered the vocabulary as anyone/anything that was bothersome, irritating, or persistent.
