This cartoon is somewhat misleading. The telescope in Greenbank is a RADIO telescope: Ergo, the need for a radio quiet zone. This is not made clear in the cartoon.
Did you know that George Washington wasn’t born on Washington’s birthday? No, I’m not talking about the holiday celebrated on the 3rd Monday in February which, is legally defined as “Washington’s Birthday” NOT “President’s Day.” George Washington was born on February 11, 1731. However, in 1752, England and its possessions finally switched from the Julian Calendar to the Gregorian Calendar, which was established in 1582. This meant that the British Empire deleted 11 days from the calendar. In that year September 2, 1752 was followed by September 14, 1752. Like most of the British Empire, Washington shifted his birthday 11 days from February 11 (Old Style) to February 22 (New Style.) In 1968 the United States made the Uniform Holidays Act into law. This moved Washington’s Birthday to the 3rd Monday in February. It can fall anywhere from the 15th to the 21st. Yes, folks, our government in its wisdom INSURED that Washington’s Birthday would NEVER AGAIN be celebrated on Washington’s Birthday. EITHER of them. Your government at work.
