Kind of shocked people into acting more responsibly, at least for a few weeks.

Congress relaxed the laws put in place during the Depression to prevent something like that from happening. Greedy investment companies weren’t making enough money according their desires and certainly took advantage of the new relaxed laws to almost crater the entire world’s economy. Obama and Congress during his first 2 years took measures to prevent this but Obama didn’t prosecute those who went beyond the law in their greed.

At one, I stood up, said I’d take the blame for everything wrong as long as we could work on solving the problems.

That revolving door is for former advisors who become lobbyists.

    And his lifelong healthcare?

Attended way too many meetings like that rather than facing the issues.

My hands were shaking when I wrote a check for 20% (required by a conventional mortgage) of the house I bought in ’95. First house, bought years before, just a 1% down payment under the type of mortgage I wasable to obtain.

Not exactly the same situation. Requirements to obtain a mortgage are much tighter. People aren’t getting them on just a wing and a prayer. If one doesn’t get an adjustable rate one with a looming massive payment after 5 or so years, they can (hopefully) keep on paying the bill. Of course, homeowners insurance and property taxes are doing nothing but going up …

We’d try to be slick, put the radio in a pants pocket and run the headphones inside our shirt. It sometimes worked. One of my teachers said whomever had one had to update the class on the game. Our shop teacher was a big baseball fan and brought in his tabletop radio so everyone could listen.

My grade school also had boxes of dried provisions (MREs, crackers, etc.) laid in, I guess for the survivors to live off afterwards. They were already a decade old by the time I attended.
