Whenever I’d visit Nana or she’d visit us, she’s slip me a five-dollar bill and tell me to “buy ice cream.” This was in the late-1960s and early 1970s, so I could buy a lot of ice cream with that. My mother always chastised her mom for doing it but it never stopped her. Even though she’s been gone for over 40 years, I still miss my grandmother and think of our times together.
I don’t really have a single favorite, but I enjoyed the James Herriot books. His life as a veterinarian in Yorkshire, England, are great. I also love reading biographies of historical figures. Ron Chernow’s biographies, for instance, are terrific. Never stop reading. It keeps you young.
Even if you didn’t care for “Of Mice and Men” or “The Grapes of Wrath,” give “Travels With Charley: In Search of America” a try. I think it’ll change your opinion of Steinbeck.
Sounds like that meeting needs its attendees to be playing bullsh-t bingo. That always helped me tolerate all those meetings filled with corporate bafflegab.
