A BIOS (basic input/output system) is code on a computer or phone that is stored in memory on the main board. That code runs when you turn on or reboot the device and tells the device enough so that it can load the operating system, e.g. Windows, iOS, Android. The BIOS also does a self test at power on, hence the acronym.
