    There was a bit of a fad for retelling stories “in words of one syllable” in the early 1900s and some writers (especially Lucy Aikin) made a really good job of it. However, some totally cheated! They used hyphens e.g. rab-bit, mo-ther, Eng-lish. Take a look on Project Gutenberg.
