Oh, it’s Shaenon! Hi, Shaenon! I’m looking forward to seeing Nancy’s precipitous descent into mad science.

I mean, I know I personally would have wondered why otherwise healthy people I knew were getting sick and, in some cases, dying of the same unknown illness. I would have wondered what was going on when I myself got sick with symptoms that didn’t match anything I’d ever had before. I would have wondered why the hospitals and ICUs in my city were suddenly overflowing with patients.

That’s not quite what happened. David Beasley, head of the UN’s World Food Program, told CNN that it would only take “$6 billion to help 42 million people that are literally going to die,” and that billionaires need to “step up now, on a one-time basis.” Note: he made no claim about ending world hunger, he was talking about heading off the specific hunger crisis that was looming at the time. Musk then misrepresented that in a tweet by saying “If WFP can describe on this Twitter thread exactly how $6B will end world hunger, I will sell Tesla stock right now and do it.”

Beasley then tweeted out the plan, in as much detail as one can go into about a global multi-billion-dollar plan to help millions of people in a Twitter thread, and linked to a 1000-word executive summary of the plan.

Musk didn’t respond, and as far as I can tell hasn’t responded in the 2.5 years since.

Yes, they believe that only a minority of Very Special People — a group which, by coincidence, happens to contain themselves — ought to rule over everyone else.

Are certain words creeping into their conversation? Words like “swell?” And “so’s your old man?”

It depends very heavily on the specific school. My job takes me into a different public school every week, so I get a good sampling. Some schools require their kids to lock up their cell phones at the beginning of each day. Others let the kids keep them, but enact consequences if they’re caught using them. Still others have basically given up and many kids are on them more or less constantly.

Ooh, I’m not familiar with Caroline Cash, but I’ve been a fan of Garrity for ages and really look forward to seeing her take.
