It’s a broadly used regional word meaning, “well, yep” or “well, yes”—> Welp. See also Well’sir—> “Well, yes sir” and well’m—> “Well, yes m’aam”. I’ve heard it across the southeast BUT this strip author appears to outside the south.
I definitely had this problem the first time I trimmed a row of holly hedge. It’s like, if you give a mouse a cookie. As the things you trim by change up close, it’s tougher to get yourself to step away for perspective. I’m sure there’s a trick to it but the following year, I made a point to step away and look back. That helped.
I think this is the same challenge for nail biters. You get a hangnail or a snag, then try to even it…suddenly, the nail is gone.
