Hey, gang! Does anybody else remember an animated Christmas special from Canada called “The Gift of Winter” (1974)? Dan Aykroyd and Gilda Radner, pre-SNL, did many of the voices. It’s kind of hard to find now (it used to be available on VHS), but you might try YouTube. It’s very sweet and worth looking up.

The reason I bring it up is because you see the obvious influence on Cathy Guisewite’s cartooning style. In fact, one character, a little girl called Tender, is a dead ringer for the early Cathy.

    Merry Christmas, Cathy fans!

That was Cathy’s cue to walk out (“Well, if I don’t have my own way yet, I’d better go home to my own house and develop it. Bye, Mom!”) instead of enabling her mother’s dominant behavior.

    She’ll be back.

Add my vote to those who have expressed a hope for “Classic Cathy” remaining in the papers (especially 1979-1986, which IMHO were the peak years for “Cathy”).

At least I hope we can expect a “Complete Cathy Collection” series of books in the near future.

It’s indeed sad that comic strips have descended to such a low level of quality that the best ones are reruns.

    Where did Irving’s parents go?

Notice that Andrea’s coloring her hair now.

It’s just as well this comic strip is ending. What used to be a great “woman’s perspective” story has now become a lame comment on obsession with electronic devices.

I don’t blame her. “Cathy” was a great comic strip 30 years ago.

Does anybody actually think that slavery to technology is funny?

Maybe the two bikini girls were thinking “I hope I’m not that shallow or insecure or image-obsessed or defensive when I’m her age [however old Cathy is supposed to be now].”

How great if one of them said to Cathy “Get over yourself, Grandma.”
