I once kibitzed in a chess game. It was obvious to me that both players were below my level and didn’t really know what they were doing, but lone player was slightly better than the other player that he had a smug superior attitude and was heckling the other player. I could see that the other player couldn’t win because he was down to his king and his knight while the other player had his king, a bishop, and a rook. I knew that the second player would turn the game into a stalemate by taking the first guys rook but since that meant losing his knight to the bishop he was about to back out of the attack when I stepped in and asked if I could kibitz. The first player was so sure of his position he told me to go ahead so I told the other player to take the rook, he hesitated because he didn’t want to lose his knight but decided I knew what I was doing and took the rook. The first player took the knight and thanked me for giving him the game. I told him I just made sure he couldn’t win the game and he scoffed. I had to leave to run an errand but I came back a few minutes later and the first player was practically in tears as he stared at the board and told me, “I couldn’t win, it was a stalemate.”
