    We had Grandma (pronounced Gra’ma) and Grandpa (pronounced Gran’pa) followed by lastnames for the four of them and Dad’s maternal grandma. Mom’s paternal grandma was Granny because that’s what Mom called her as a kid.

    My family generally pronounces Grandpa as “Gran’pa,” dropping the D. With Grandma, when the D is dropped, the M takes over the N; so we get “Gramma.” As Macushlalondra notes above, they are not different words, they are simply pronounced less precisely than spelled (as with much of English).
