Old retired (April 01 2009) railwayman living in Calgary Alberta Canada. I was always very interested in antique cars, finally bought a 1928 Early AR Ford in 1989. My Moniker comes from me cooking 22 kilos of bacon on a griddle for about 35 other campers on long-weekend Monday morning... Well, my Good Professor, my understanding is that toenails are nowadays considered a protective device, mostly from those little toe-stomping grandkids I have, who never fail to tromp on mine!
But, in the ancestry scheme of things, way back in the caveman days (even before MY birth), the toenails (and the fingernails) were used for gripping the ground while walking or climbing or digging. When homo-erectus became bipedal, toenails helped to maintain balance and to protect the end of the toes.
