@onguard: You said “The Dem Libs experiment of putting women in front line positions is a resounding Failure” as if the rapes and other sexual assaults are specifically related to women serving in combat positions – except the statistics being discussed occurred BEFORE combat status was opened to women.

Also, what about the women assaulted by their drill sergeants at Lackland AFB and other men and women assaulted here in their own country.

Why should rape be condoned for men in the military and not for veterans who have left the military? Or for police who get similar training?

Interesting that yesterday’s cartoon on guns got 58 comments and this one only 3 (as of this writing). Maybe more would be done about the problem if more of us paid attention to it.

mskemple: Unfortunately there are a LOT of federal (and state) laws that use the words “married”, including the 1040 in the cartoon. While it might be a good idea to change all of them to “paired under civil laws” leaving out the word ‘marriage’, this isn’t practical. Add that to the fact that your “joined” is the same as the “civil union” laws that are present in many states and it results in the same inequalities as we used to see in “separate but equal” school systems, bus stations and drinking fountains. Most uni-sex couples just want to be like their friends, relatives and co-workers, for better or worse, in sickness or in health, etc

I wonder if the few who DID feel they “fit in” as a kid/teen are the same one who never emotionally moved on. Aging cheer leaders and overweight “jocks in high school”.

I live in a fairly affluent suburb, and until TraderJoe’s built a store 3/4 mile from my house the nearest grocery was almost 3 miles away. A little far for me to walk (and return even with a wheeled cart for the food) on the days my eyes won’t let me drive. Plenty of fast-food places within a 4-5 blocks, though. Nearest bus stop is farther than the Trader Joe’s so public transportation is pretty thin on the ground.

@rwbrand – funnier, perhaps for those of us who lived through flower power, peace signs and all the rest of the hippy times. Somewhere (thank goodness not on line) there’s a picture of me with hair to my rear end, flowers like Rory’s and a tie-dye shirt with peace necklace.

I have spent 25 years as a foster mother caring for infants whose parents wouldn’t/couldn’t manage. Abuse, drug addiction, birth defects, chldren of rape and incest – I’ve cared for all of these. If politicians want to insist that every pregnancy is brought to term, they need to start writing laws to bring up the resulting unwanted and un-cared for children to become healthy (mind and body) productive adults.

My grandsons (6 and 8) would LOVE to exaggerate their little scrapes with these bandages.

On my birthday (in March) I pack up all the canned goods from my earthquake supplies (in CA that’s a goodly amount) and deliver them to Second Harvest. Then I replace with fresh cans (is that an oxymoron?) and water. I also buy/donate a dozen cans of baby formula occasionally, although my kids have kids.
