   I also wish I could talk to my ’rents again. My dad passed in Dec 2020 and Tuesday will make a year that my mom passed. I miss them so much.

   Well, for the non-linguists it changes the sound. Convincing my students that diacritical marks actually matter is a chore. And even my native speakers don’t use the accents properly!

   The legislators tried to pass a law saying schools couldn’t start before Labor Day but it didn’t even come close to passing, I believe.

   In Indiana, each individual school district decides when to start. Mine starts on Aug. 7, the first day for all teachers. Aug. 8 is a day off, then Aug. 9 the students return. We are usually get out of school the week before Memorial Day. NGL, every year it gets harder to go back.
