Most comics artists are small-businessmen. Tony DePaul, who has been creating The Phantom for many, many years, has been forced into quitting over rights and storyline issues. Hearst wants full rights, wants to pay next to nothing, and will not follow the creative guidelines begun by the great Lee Falk, and perpetuated by Tony, who acquired the rights from Lee. .The strip started in 1936, and at its peak had over 100 million readers worldwide. I started reading it (for myself) as soon as I could make out the words. The end to the strip is sad, but better this way than having its theme and storylines compromised.
