   We used them in pairs to lift bales (again as you say, small bales not the 4 ton behemoths you see today!!) two men would stick the fork in the bale at each end and then lift up and over onto the trailer, usually when the trailer load was getting too high to lift them up by hand. Otherwise much as you say.

   A pitch fork wouldn’t be much use for mucking out, at least not what we called a pitch fork, it has only two prongs, it was mostly used for pitching hay and straw bales onto a trailer. The fork we used for mucking out etc had 4 prongs and for some odd reason in the south of the county was and still is known as an evil.
