   Exactly. I maintain that the reason people get so shirty about the parents – and Lynn’s choices – is because Lynn is just so brilliant. These people feel real, ergo some commenters criticise them from on high. I don’t love all the storylines over the years, but I’ve read each one several times because Lynn makes it all alive.

   Lynn is a terrific artist and storyteller. The fact that so many people get shirty about her characterisation shows how brilliant she is – they really wouldn’t give a toss otherwise (or read the comic, of course).

    Exactly! Bully for all the Elly-haters if none of their kids ever once slipped the net or broke a rule, but nearly all my friends have childhood stories that ended in tears (and A&E) because they got into mischief even having parents who were attentive. That’s why parenting can be so draining.
