There was another old saying . . . “If I wake up and read the obituaries and my name’s not in there, it’s a good day”.
But that’s obsolete. Obituary notices used to be printed for free. Now, (unless you’re a celebrity of some sort) someone has to PAY the paper to print the obituary.
And no one I know would pay a dime to advertise my passing.
Opinions are opinions. Thoughts. Nothing more, nothing less. Harmless in and of themselves. Most people have them about a lot of issues. I do not have a problem with people verbally expressing opinions.
However, problems may occur when the person with an opinion decides to ACT on that opinion. The opinion may be fact-based or (as Croc says) “gut feel”. In either case, the ACT is what may be harmful. People armed with 100% of The Truth may still act irresponsibly.
Keeping Discourse civil is the first step. Keeping Actions civil keeps the peace.
However, as paldec noted, there absolutely NEEDS to be reform to our immigration system. People desiring employment here need to have access to a sensible system. Employers need access to those individuals.
The employees do not need to be citizens. They do not necessarily even need to be permanent residents. They just need to have legally crossed the border with the appropriate (non-hypothetical) work permits.
I’m pretty sure his first scale is backwards. People had opinions long before “facts” were available.Old saying: “Opinions are like belly buttons. Everybody has one”. (Multiple sources found).
There could indeed be people who are pro illegal immigration. Let’s say a political party wants more members. They could promote illegal immigration, with an eye toward (eventually) offering legal citizenship to those individuals. The recipients of that offer would probably be grateful to that party, and, upon becoming legal voters, would bolster that political party’s ranks. Just hypothetical, of course.
People do not have to choose to be exclusively either liberal or conservative.
I’m a financial conservative, but a social liberal.
You’ll never convince me to support Keynesian economics. I also do not see value in a larger, more powerful central government. The states and local governments should listen to their citizens.
I do support medically-necessary abortion, making it available in cases like rape (but not as a general means of birth control – there are better options). Gay marriage – go for it. Could not care less. Gender change for children – Nope. That crosses the line.
Do I personally approve of same-sex relationships? No, but that should not matter to you. Live your life, I’ll live mine. Just do not “require” my approval or (financial) support. (Back to the conservative thing).
Have a happy Thanksgiving. Be grateful you live in a country that allows you to live life the way you want. I’ve lived in 22 countries. With all its faults, this is still the best.
Just as it is hard to believe anyone didn’t.
