My sweet Pipsqueak sure didn’t waste any time. She was 16.5 when she had a stroke. I had to have her euthanized. Even though I had other cats at the time, it still broke my heart. The very next evening, I was at the local shelter to help teach students about cat body language and the cat room rules for our summer “kids reading to cats” program. The shelter vet came up to me and said “I have a wobbly kitten in the clinic”. My first thought was Pipsqueak sent me a new kitty to love. The very next day, I met Dora for the first time. She’s a special needs tortie point Siamese who has tortitude & Siamese sass!! Dora is the youngest of my 5 cats. Three are “failed fosters” because I’m a sucker for special needs cats. I totally get how easy it is to become attached when you don’t plan to!!
BWR, good for you!! It’s not an easy task but it can be done!! One of my cats was brought into the shelter at 4 months of age. He had been abused and was terrified of everyone. He came home with me as a foster…it took 2 weeks to be able to touch him with one finger. He’s also a black cat and some people are still superstitious…and he has an inner ear polyp that gives him a head tilt. Long story short…that sweet cat was my first “failed foster” (failed to go back to the shelter for public adoption). I’ve had him as part of my feline family for 3 years and he’s become one of the sweetest cats I’ve ever had. It took a long time but he learned to trust again!
