Actually, the apparent size of a decent laptop screen on your lap is frequently larger than that of a flatscreen TV on the other side of the room. For me, I can choose a 16" Macbook or a 49" flatscreen about 8 feet away. When I compare screens, the Macbook’s appears larger than the TV’s. Go figure.
