The special also was the first on-film appearance of Boba Fett, in an animated sequence that drops into he middle of the otherwise live-action special. Prior to that, Fett had only been seen in a parade, because the initial costume was ready.

Nope. Sal is serious. He really thinks that what he saw was good, and that others should agree. But then, he’s Sal…

No, SPACEBALLS was a Mel Brooks movie that spoofed STAR WARS. Sal is thinking of THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, which was supposed to be… um… taken seriously? Hard to say. But it was an inside job, not a parody by an outsider.

Well, those were ancient times, so Mark and Thomas got to fill in the details as best they could! As to whether Morgan Le Fay historically had anything to do with it… which of us was there to say?

That was The Queen of Hearts.

Well, many of us do know. The second edition of THE HOBBIT was different from the first. The biggest change was the chapter where Bilbo meets Gollum and acquires the ring. It was not yet The Ring. It was no more than a magical device that turned the wearer invisible, and Gollum was perfectly happy to give it to Bilbo as a prize for winning the riddle game. When he couldn’t find it (not knowing that Bilbo had already found it) he happily showed the Hobbit the way out.

This did not jibe with it being Sauron’s One Ring of power, or with Gollum’s enslavement to it. Tolkien couldn’t find any way in THE LORD OF THE RINGS to explain this discrepancy, so he rewrote and the chapter, and if you have a first edition, it has the old version.

That’s me, but I’m the letterer and colorist. The artist is Thomas Yeates. He’s a whole different guy.

I’d keep ’em safely stashed away too, if I had them.

Which comment is this in reply to? Yes, Gandalf was indeed introduced in THE HOBBIT. His name was originally going be Bladorthin, because Tolkien was using the name Gandalf for the lead Dwarf. That Dwarf became Thorin Oakenshield, and the Gandalf name was given to Baldorthin. It was an all-around improvement in my opinion.

I was named for my great-grandfather. My older brother and I have the first names that our Dad wished he’d had. He was not going to give his to any of his sons, and he didn’t believe in the ‘junior’ routine anyway. Your son is NOT a new edition of you.

My Dad’s family was overflowing with Thomas Robertses. Lots of ‘em. I don’t know where my middle name, Scott came from, though. I’m not aware of any other Scott in the family tree.
