morningglory73, who I was replying to, seemed to imply that math and arithmetic are the same thing. I was just trying to set the record straight. And there are ways besides algebra to solve the problem, although algebra is probably the quickest.
Arithmetic is the branch of mathematics that has to do with the basic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division). You have to understand arithmetic before you can move on to other types of math, such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
