In 2011 I was traveling in Oregon and stopped at a Costco (I am a member) gas station and being from California jumped out to pump my own gas…I was stopped by an irate attendant who informed me that even though I paid electronically etc…I was violating state law to try and pump my own gas…
My dentist had a sign on the wall directly in front of the chair stating … “Painless Dentistry Upstairs” … His office was housed in a 1 story building.
Old joke…days of “Painless Parker” who always had the upstairs offices.
Same, had 3 of 4 removed while in Germany 1967-9 (all luck). I was assigned to permanent post running Education Center so I had them done during field or live fire exercises when there was little business at Ed. Center.
I had a similar response when arriving in Victoria from Port Angeles on a car ferry with my son…“Where’s your mum” the officious young female Canada immigration officer demanded (my son was 13 at the time). Fortunately we had prepared and I had a signed statement from his mother that he was traveling with me with her approval…
PS the US military as far back as when I was in 1969-69 made you think metric distances….we ranged tank weapons fire in Kilometers commonly known as K’s
