This is exactly why Nate and Daphne shouldn’t break up. This is easily the most growth Nate has shown in any of his relationships. There’s no chance that Nate is this humble with any of his previous girlfriends; he would have seen them as the problem.
He broke up with Kelly for purely selfish and egotistical reasons. He wasn’t really ready for a relationship with Angie. Trudy was a self-centered jerk who deserved Nate dumping her. Daphne makes Nate better and makes Nate want to be better.
Of course I’m not joking. Mrs. Godfrey is a fair, reasonable teacher who is willing to listen to her students as long as they don’t interrupt her class, and she genuinely cares about her students learning something. That’s a great teacher; it’s really not hard at all to see why she’s been named Teacher of the Year twice.
No, the reason that Mrs. Godfrey yells at Nate is because he’s disrespectful and obnoxious. The strip is full of examples where Mrs. Godfrey takes Nate’s side without hesitation, and Nate is never appreciative. One big one: Nate got a 96 because of a mistake that Mrs. Godfrey made when he deserved an 86. When Gina pointed this out, Mrs. Godfrey let Nate keep his 96 and gave Gina detention.
Mrs. Godfrey’s stance is simple: If she’s not busy, she’s got all the time in the world to listen to her students. If she’s busy teaching, anything you say better be related to what she’s discussing. She’s a fair, no-nonsense teacher and Nate would have a much better relationship with her if he wasn’t such an obnoxious goof-off.
