I have an Uncle that I’d say is close with the work, drinking and smoking (both have given up) – and to be honest I’m surprised he has survived as long as he has, but it has caught him up
Fortunately didn’t have those rules where I worked – either you couldn’t put classified info on the computer or it was secured with no floppy disks access (well before USB & Internet access to desktop). A couple were in safes and you had to shut them down and lock them away when you’d finished.
There is a difference between an anticipated error e.g. where user does something wrong and an unexpected error due to some unhandled data condition/bugs etc.
If it is something the user can fix then we spend time producing sensible error messages, if not then you should get a error with message to help report it. systems are internal and there will be support to help if needed
Probably doesn’t help the average developer/engineer much either, unless part of sequence in the logs.
Most of unexpected error messages coming up in my systems will say – sorry something went wrong, please quote <> in ticket. The unexpected messages will generally be rather alien to a no programmer and a potential security risk if hackers get at it.
When she says years – is it an Earth year, a Pluto year (248 Earth years) or a Sun year – i.e. how long it takes Sun to rotate around Sagittarius A* (Milky Ways super massive black hole) @ 230 million Earth years
