Yeah I’ve enjoyed what I’ve seen of Discovery but I’m still like “Why redesign Klingons? They already looked cool!” Worf and Kruge are the best!

That’s awesome! And thanks for your email! I tried responding but my email got bounced back to me for some reason! So glad you’re enjoying the chickens and I hope you keep drawing! :)

It’s all about practice. Draw every day. Even if it’s just for 5 minutes. That’s how I started. And when that seems easy, push yourself by drawing things that you’re uncomfortable drawing (like people, horses, hands, bicycles – everybody has something they don’t like drawing). Being a bit uncomfortable means that you’re learning, which is a very good thing! And you can develop your own style by looking at other people’s art and comics. Pay attention to the things that you like, and try to figure out how the artist created them.

It’s also helpful to take art classes, partly because they teach you the basic techniques, and partly because they give you assignments and deadlines, so you’re forced to try new things and produce new work. I’m mostly self-taught, but I have taken a few courses here and there just to push myself to try new things.

If you have more questions, I’ve got more advice on my website (here, for example: https://www.dougsavage.com/beginner-advice/), and feel free to send me questions via my contact form: https://www.dougsavage.com/contact/

What I really love about doing school visits is that kids are absolutely fearless. Up to about Grade 7, they never doubt that they can draw and they just leap into the drawing exercises and come up with some pretty amazing stuff. It’s inspiring!

Oh yes I’m still drawing cartoons every weekday. When I started posting on GoComics in 2012, the idea was to post my older strips and we started with 2008. So my GoComics postings have been 4 years behind ever since!

I’m also still doing school visits. They’re a lot of fun!

FYI, I photographed these comics because I was on the road at the time, on a 10-school speaking tour to talk to kids about making comics. It was a blast! Here’s a blog I wrote about it: https://www.dougsavage.com/a-fun-week-of-school-visits/

Yeah I rarely say “eh” when I’m here in Canada. When I’m in the U.S., I’m deliberately trying not to say “eh”, but then I’m so hyper-aware of “eh” that I start saying “eh” all the time. Pretty confusing, eh?

I say “eh” much more often when I’m traveling in the States. I think it’s because I become self-conscious about saying “eh”, so then I end up saying it more often!

Just the one on the right. The other one can’t be Canadian because they’re complaining out loud!
