The prospect of deliberately targeting civilian nuclear power plants is an ominous escalation. However, these are large installations and gunners are still nothing like as accurate as Hollywood would have you believe. Hope and prey that the damage was to ancillary infrastructure and that the plant director has scrammed the reactors; which was probably the intent any way – deny Ukraine it’s electricity base load.
IF the targeting is deliberate, and the intent regarding compromising of the “containment” then perhaps it’s time that we (the “free” world) have to take a look at whether or not NATO engagement niceties still hold up.
Reminder – destroyed Iraq on the false premise that they posed a clear and present danger through possession of weapons and delivery capabilities they demonstrably didn’t have. How should we react to an aggressor if they’re hell bent on “accidental” nuclear release.
Final note, of course it isn’t really an American problem because the fallout, will only minimally impact the mainland. It’s we europeans who will pay the price.
Have you seen the photographs of the “civilians” armed in Ukraine? Firstly if they fight they will die. They’ll have little to no idea how to deal with the tactics of trained infantry who appear to have been told to crush all resistant. Secondly and appearances can be deceiving but some of those issued with arms do not look like the sort of citizen I would like to encounter without an assault rifle of my own. Thirdly, and by the most remote chance this all comes out with some sort of resolution for the country formally known as Ukraine, this weapons are not going to meekly go back into storage once this is over.
It’s an appalling situation. Russia knows that our resolve is so emasculated that we will do nothing more than wring our hands, issue stinging rebukes, and pile on more sanctions which in fact have the effect of binding Russia closure to Putin’s kleptocracy.
Look at the statistics… most of us (and I include myself) are just resource consuming waste of space on the cosmic journey to the grave. Statistically speaking your dentist has about as much chance of producing a world changing child as I did (ah, but I chose not to have any kids because the world is just too f’d up).
