I don’t know when/where you’re basing this on, but “gay” (unless used insultingly like keffekup indicates) has not, in my experience, been an extreme insult. F*g or f*ggot is, I believe, what you’re thinking of and those ARE extremely offensive and generally followed up with a threat of gay bashing/violence.
Two words: Ozone layer. Though that has largely been repaired/remediated.
I lived through the 60’s and in my experience, there was no such thing as sunblock/SPF; It was all “Tanning lotion” designed to enhance your tan. There was titanium dioxide (the colored stuff surfers put on their noses), but you didn’t generally smear that all over your body.
Visited Corpus Christi around 1971, every one of us got severely sunburned.
We do have a much better understanding of UV damage these days.. hence the change in product available to protect us from it.
