   “Just a comic” isn’t an excuse for bad writing or for suddenly changing a character’s personality for a lazy one-off gag. Bill Watterson didn’t randomly turn Calvin into a perfectly behaved kid when it suited him. Gary Trudeau didn’t suddenly show Uncle Duke as responsible and sober for a cheap laugh. Charles Schulz never made Schroder dislike classical music for no reason. Even mediocre cartoonists generally know to keep their characterizations consistent from day to day so that readers know and understand what is going on.
