I’ve read science fiction based on your idea. The cities rose higher and higher, the upper sections were occupied by the “elite” and lower sections by descending classes, with the lowest where the sun never reached by the dregs of society. The countryside was reserved for food production – gigantic areas serviced by mechanoids. Guess what – there was a revolution!
