In 1977 when I was 24 I had all 4 wisdom teeth extracted and was paid $75 by taking part in a study of a new pain med. I was awake and had light anesthesia and all 4 were extracted. I then had to wait and let them know when I felt pain. They made me wait an extra hour to be sure it was painful enough. They gave me the “pill” (it was a double blind study so they didn’t know if it was a placebo or not). It was a sugar pill like those found in children’s nurse/doctor toys. I have lots of trouble swallowing pills so I know and I could taste it. Anyway, I had to wait another hour before they would give me a “real” pain pill (only half so I would not over dose). 10 minutes later I told my mother we could leave. We stopped and got food and the perscription filled. I ate (very carefully), took a long nap and watched tv. At 11 pm I thought about taking a pain pill but decided to wait until I needed it. I fell asleep for the night and never took any pill after that.
