I disabled the voice option in all electronics in the house – computers, tablets, cellphones, stereos, security devices, televisions, and even the thermostat.
My brother’s neighbor trained his watch dog to be friendly to everyone and let them come in the house. However, they could not leave unless the master ok’d it. When questioned why he trained him like that, he said the burglar, when caught “in the house” by the police, could not argue that it was not him.
The wife and I put things we want in an on-line “wish list” throughout the year – and share it with the kids – it is generally related to our hobbies or travel. We double check the list in October and remove things that are not applicable any more. Since we don’t live near our families, we don’t know what the latest “trends” are so we send the kids/grandkids money and let them do as they wish – much easier than dealing with sending the wrong things.
Thankfully we have not had bed bugs when traveling – close one time when we found one in the shower at the motel we were at but the room was not infested. We now have a 19ft travel trailer that is our home away from home… We have it sprayed for bugs in the spring before we head out and in the fall before we put it away for storage. We have a cat that travels with us – 3 out of 4 kids are allergic to the cat so we can’t stay at their house thus the TT – works great for us.
No argument from me on that. The company I worked for mandated that if you were on the job and going to make/receive a call while on the road (like a scheduled conference call), you must pull off and park. Failure to do so meant termination. The company could track phone movements and talk times for the company issued phones and they let it be known. Note: Company policy was no business calls allowed using personal phone. Although it was done for safety and legal reasons – I fully supported the policy – talking on a phone (even hands free) is a distraction and is not the same as a conversation with a passenger – the passengers are generally watching for hazards too…
I worked tech support for a large, international company in the late ’90’s. They mandated that all work would be done on a network server (which today is called the cloud). All programs were configured to auto save. If the computer crashed, they just swapped out the hard drive with pre-imaged drives – took a couple of minutes to configure the drive to the computer. User logged in and was up and running in about 10 minutes with minimal data loss. They estimated a savings of approximately $1M per year from no more lost man hours and productivity.
