on Pluggers
I happily fall into the Plugger category, and I am well north of the 49th Parallel…and though not entirely by choice, I live in Vancouver, about as urban as one can be….

Ah, the freedom of no longer having to check….seeing that our Posties are, yet again, on strike, just in time for Christmas….it’s a Canadian tradition!

Sigh, I envy my American brothers and sisters, having your election behind you now, regardless of who you may have voted for…
Up here in The Great White North we still have almost a year of madness ahead of us before we can hope for any kind of positive change.
Sigh.

Being a hockey fan from Vancouver, I can sorrowfully relate to the folks in NOLA…sigh.
We both live in cities without, apparently, a pro sports team….

Hockey, of course, being a denizen of The Great White North…Stampedes and rodeos (if we must) because I came from the Cariboo, home of the legendary Williams Lake Stampede….NASCAR and stock car racing….

In Junior High I was (and still am) a diehard Sci-Fi fan, so Isaac Asimov was one of my favourite authors…I did my best to buy all of his books, most of which I still have, five decades on.
In 1975 he took a diversion from robots and space and published “Lecherous Limmericks”….it included, along with other classics of the era, the reference to that little island in New England.
Clearly, while I have grown older, I have somehow, very happily, managed not to mature…that book is still one of my favourites.

Growing up in very rural, very Redneck northern British Columbia, there were two inalienable rites of passage for pre-teen boys….in the winter, when it was -20, it was sticking your tongue on a metal post or handrail….in the summer, it was peeing on the electric fence around the pig sty….
I confess to getting caught by the frozen handrail, spent three days not able to taste anything…..BUT…it was clear to me that the pigs didn’t like the electric fence one little bit, so there was no way I was testing that….but I got my little brother to do it. I was good with experiencing it vicariously….

hmmmm…..pretty sure, in retrospect, after his night in the doghouse, Brutus may look back on this moment and say to himself: “Self, you probably have handled that just a little bit differently….”
A few of the Nanny State Wannabe cities in our Metro (Vancouver) area have mandated sprinklers in personal residences – including the very few single family homes they are allowed to approve…pretty sure that no good will come of that…
