I’m not aware of the BBC considering whether or not to air Dr. Who, but my “Whovian” (most hate that term) friends have told me the original broadcast was delayed for a couple of minutes due to a newsreel about Kennedy being broadcast first. Due to low ratings, and a major power outage on November 23rd, BBC repeated the broadcast the next week with slightly better ratings. BBC concidered cancelling the series during the first story arc because of the low ratings and production costs. But once the fifth episode where the Daleks debuted aired the ratings began to increase.
Reminds me of the lemon meringue pies I’ve seen in restaurants and for sale (occasionally) in stores. More meringue than lemon custard. I prefer the lemon layer to be at least as thick as the meringue layer. If the lemon layer is thicker it’s even better.
From reading labels most brands of pumpkin pie fillings include one or more varieties of squash. Libby’s is the only brand I’m aware of that is just pumpkin. (Although my mother made a butternut squash pie that was d@mn good. One of my brothers preferred it to her pumpkin pies.)
I make a batch of spaghetti (with extra extra virgin olive oil to prevent it sticking together) every so often and freeze the extra servings. Once a week I’ll thaw a serving in the frig overnight than top it with a serving of my homemade chili (which I make 6-quarts of at a time and also freeze the individual servings). Makes a nice filling supper. (I get 24 servings from each chili batch and also use one serving a week on a baked potato, so I get two relatively low-cost meals a week for three months. Helps when on a fixed income.)
About 22 people are killed in the United States every year by a cow as opposed to 10 people worldwide being killed by a shark. But I think pigs are the worst (even though there don’t seem to be any statistics on them), especially a sow with a litter. I remember being on my grandpa’s farm and one of my aunt’s then fiance was leery of the cows in the feed lot. We told him they were much safer to be around than the hogs/pigs, then my grandpa showed him the nasty scar on his leg where an old sow decided grandpa had gotten to close to her piglets. The fiance pretty much stayed close to the house after that and didn’t venture into the feedlots.
Yes it is (actually 6 picas is .00367 inches short of a full inch). And there are twelve points to a pica. I’m an old graphics nerd, having spent time in the graphics field, especially typesetting. Don’t know if they still teach younger graphics students that. When I was talking to a grand niece who graduated with a graphics design degree I mentioned copy fitting, picas and points to her and all I got back was a blank stare. Guess she just “wings it” on her computer. I have a bunch of old equipment (bow pens and compass, adjustable triangle, etc.) I offered her but she said she didn’t use any of it.
I once had a coworker who’s daughter would eat anything she could get her hands on. Or at least try. When the daughter was in the office one day (Mom brought her in for a couple of hours before a doctor’s appointment) her Mom asked me to watch her while Mom had to do a couple of things for the boss. (I knew about the little girl’s “condition”.) While I was on the phone for a few minutes, the little girl ate most of the flowers in a vase.
I like the flavor of blue cheese but I’m allergic to it. Every time I eat it I’ll have a splitting headache within 24 hours. The best way I can describe it is like the migraines I had when I was younger without the other symptoms (nausea, aura, light sensitivity, etc.). I’d suspect the tyramine in it as I know that can trigger migraines in some people, but tyramine is in other foods (including various cheeses) I enjoy and I’m fine with them. Maybe it’s the mold? A higher concentration of tyramine?
Google “A Surprising Number of Bank Robbers Use Mass Transit for Their ‘Getaway’”. Bloomberg article (about ten years old) about people who try to use mass transit for their getaway.
