   Ok, not touching the other stuff, but Fast and Furious was a classic gun-walking operation. The idea being, watch a gun transaction and trace the guns and the cash so you can trace gangs over the border. Unfortunately it went south. It did not deserve the moniker of a scandal.

   Wait, wait, hold on. I agree with much of the substance of what you said, but I do have to make one correction. In the aftermath of the Spanish flu, there was, in fact, a sharp recession, the recession of 1920-21, which economists cite Spanish Flu as a cause of. It was severe, and contributed to Harding’s victory in 1920

   Of course— but as we move into the future, we must make sure that measures, taken for the greater good, do not too strongly adversely affect a community when we have the means to cushion the blow. Think about the rhetoric on free trade: free trade is a net benefit, but it adversely affects a large minority: manufacturing workers. The answer is not to do nothing, the answer is not to impose tariffs (analogy to supporting the oil industry), but to cushion those who will suffer from the shift— like what retraining programs were supposed to accomplish

   True, but a lot of people are employed by the oil biz. Although cheap oil is an overall benefit to the American economy (which imports it), that shouldn’t blind us to the fact that some communities rely on oil money. That’s not to say we should be trying to get the price to rise, but that we need some kind of program to mitigate the effects on those who are affected (workers, I mean), whether that’s a tax credit, or a jobs program or what have you

   Hm. I have to disagree with this comic. To characterize members of the supreme court as being so blindly partisan and partial is both misleading— and dangerous. And yes, I know that’s exactly what Trump did. But very little of what the bench does is inconsistent with their judicial ideologies. Thomas in particular is very consistent, and Robert is consistent with his perceived dual roles of swing vote and leader. I don’t know much about the other justices, but I suspect that while political pressure emanates out of the White House and the public, neither wing of the court is susceptible to it in such a way to classify them as dependent on the executive.

    NYC has a pretty low crime rate for its population.
