Elvis, a correction: spiders’ silk glands are in their abdomens, and the silk emerges from spinnerets at the back of the abdomen. You might be thinking of cribellate spiders, which do have a “comb” on the fourth leg that unfurls the silk from a special organ on the abdomen called the cribellum. Otherwise, great spidery reporting!
I’ve never met such a bitter, off-point group of comics . . . “fans”? I don’t see any actual fandom. Just attempts to enforce some sort of Secret Club whose agenda is juvenile insults. Even over at “Luann” people argue about the actual strip: the artwork, the plot, the characters. So argue about it. Assholery is not argument.
Don’t diss Sparky. And he perfected his graphic style over many years. If you’re looking for realistic depictions of creatures in the comics, you’re the one that’s on the wrong page.
Over the years, most of my favorite strips have taken on artists to improve the graphic quality without affecting the storyline or characters. No reason this strip can’t do the same. That whale is, indeed, not all “right.”
This makes no sense. Adam was the pioneer of working from home, and now half the country is doing it. He’s had countless contracts over the years; he’s not just a failed novelist. As a freelancer, he never left the workforce, so there’s no need to “rejoin” it. So as a plot development, it’s really dated.
Bets is smart and confident, and it’s time for her to reinvent herself as one of those “I’m so over the phone obsession” young people who are rediscovering the pleasures of face-to-face moments, meaningful goods, and creativity freed from the all-seeing Internet. I know a few young people who are heading in that direction. She’s discovered the thing she thought she was using was in fact using her. Kudos! Many people never learn that at all.
