Knowing what I know now? You bet! In spite of Kent State and all the rest of it.

Sad part is, I’ve worked at a place that did it this way. Also had to be written in pencil, so they could change it later (but you still had to sign it).

Except zero is NOT within an order of magnitude of 1! An order of magnitude less than 1 is only 0.1

This strip has nothing to say about Eileen’s grades, or competition with Jason. He made the whole thing up, just to wind up Paige.

I suspect it varied by school system even back then. Where I went to 8th grade in 1969 or so, no algebra in Jr High. But at high school in another state, algebra I was optional in Jr High and they assumed you had taken it if you planned to go on to college. So I wound up taking two math classes in the same year. Kind of fun, since both classes met at the same time, and if I wasn’t in class, the teacher would assume I was in the other one. Also had some algebra in 6th grade (in yet another state), so skipping it in HS was NBD.

I was just reading through a collection of Pogo (comic strip from the 50s) and they discussed this exact issue. The first two panels (and sometimes the last) were deliberately designed to not be essential to the message, because some papers would delete them.

Might depend on whether it’s a gas dryer or electric. The burner on a gas dryer gets very hot very quick, while the thermostat monitors air leaving the drum. Electric “burner” warms up much slower, so won’t get as hot before the thermostat shuts it down. But it really doesn’t matter whether the excuse is true or not. The task is to deliver completed homework. Important life lesson: you get rewarded for results, not for effort. Since she’s already done it once, she’ll find it a lot easier to do again!

Life causes cancer. Give it up now, and you won’t have to worry about cancer at all.

I wonder how many Americans have the faintest idea what that building is?
